September 1, 1941 ~ August 28, 2023 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Tribute

Bonnie Jo Nitz, age 81, of Wauwatosa, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 28, 2023.

Bonnie Jo Arnold was born September 1, 1941 in East Peoria, IL to the late Joseph and Bonnie (Kirkman) Arnold. Growing up in both Illinois and Wisconsin, Bonnie graduated from Wauwatosa East High School, and was a self-proclaimed “tomboy” who loved participating in all kinds of sports, especially swimming and playing tennis. She was known to many of her peers as “Bonnie Jo DiMaggio”. She was also a violinist in the high school orchestra and was part of the singing group, the “Bonnie Trio”. In 1962, she graduated from Bellin College of Nursing in Green Bay with a degree in nursing and spent several years working as a public health nurse in the city of Milwaukee. Bonnie was always confident in her medical knowledge and her ability to diagnose medical conditions when working with a variety of patients from newborn home visits to serving the elderly. She also served as a crisis pregnancy phone counselor for Birthright International.

Bonnie married Allen Nitz on August 12,1967 in Wauwatosa and honeymooned in Hawaii. Her greatest love was being a stay at home mom to her sons, Joe and Dan. Bonnie enjoyed knitting sweaters and scarves, collecting owl knick knacks, and reading mystery novels. She taught Sunday School at West Allis Wesleyan Church for 25 years and loved every minute of it. Bonnie was a fan of both college and professional football and became a Green Bay Packer fan when she lived in Green Bay during her college years, and even attended the same church as Bart Starr. She and her family shared a love of cats, always having at least one pet in their home. Bonnie always was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Even as her health declined over the years, she kept an unwavering and steadfast faith in the Lord.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Allen; sons Joe Nitz of Wauwatosa; and Dan (Laurie) Nitz of Pewaukee; 3 grandchildren, Nathan Nitz of Wauwatosa; and David and Allie Nitz of Pewaukee; brother-in-law James (Mary) Matthias of Menomonee Falls; brother-in-law Jerry (Christine) Nitz of West Allis; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Bonnie Arnold; two sisters, Patsy Matthias and Carol Vollmer; and her in-laws, Harold and Mildred Nitz.
