Rev. Gregory F. Lucey, S.J., was called to eternal life on September 30, 2021, at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, WI. He was 88 years old, a Jesuit for 70 years and a priest for 57 years. Born in Ferryville, WI, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1951 and was ordained a priest in 1964. He taught at his alma mater, Campion Jesuit High School, and later earned an M.A. in Liturgy from Notre Dame University and a Ph.D. in Education-Administration from UW-Madison. He held many leadership positions: Principal and President at Campion, Vice-President for Planning and then V-P for University Relations at Seattle University, Rector of Marquette University Jesuit Community, President of the Jesuit Conference in Washington, DC, President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and President and later Chancellor at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. A visionary leader, he was at heart a pastoral minister, retreat director, and spiritual director.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gregory and Ella McNamara Lucey, his brothers, former Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey and Rev. J. Roger Lucey, S.J., and by his sisters, Verona Dyer, Eleanor Watson, and Sister Mary Eleanor, O.P. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Keegan and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Gesu Church in Milwaukee on Friday October 15 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Livestreaming at gesuparish.org. His remains will be buried at Spring Hill College.
