Fr. Morrison was a member of the St. Camillus Jesuit Community and was called to eternal life on May 24, 2018. He was 81 years old, a member of the Society of Jesus for 62 years and priest for almost 50 years. He received a Masters’ Degree in History in 1965 from St. Louis University and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI in 1971. He taught at Creighton Prep in Omaha, NE as part of his Jesuit formation. After his doctorate he taught history at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI and became Assistant Academic Vice-president. In 1977 he went to Creighton University, Omaha, NE as a teacher of history and Academic Vice-president. From 1981 to 2000 he served as President of Creighton University. Then he was director of the Jesuit Retreat House, Oshkosh WI, adjunct professor of history at Marquette University, and Creighton University. Because of failing health, he was missioned to the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in 2010.
Fr. Morrison was born in Green Bay, WI on March 9, 1937. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Green Bay in 1955. In September of that year, he entered the Society of Jesus at the Jesuit Novitiate in Oshkosh, WI. He was ordained a Jesuit priest on June 4, 1968 at Gesu Church in Milwaukee, WI.
He is survived by two sisters: Mary Ann Dettman of Green Bay, WI and Ora Vantil of Largo Vista, TX.
There will be a wake at Madonna della Strada Chapel in the Jesuit Community at St. Camillus, 10201 W. Wisconsin Avenue from 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesday, May 29. The funeral Mass will follow at 7:30pm. His burial will be at 9:00am on Wednesday, May 30 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 3801 W. Morgan Avenue, Milwaukee. Memorials may be sent to the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus, 1010 N. Hooker, Chicago, IL 60642 with a notation: “In Memory of Fr. Michael Morrison, S.J.”
