Died peacefully February 21, 2018 surrounded by his family.  Born February 19, 1929 in Janesville, Wisconsin.  Survived by his wife of 41 years, Judith (nee Torbenson). He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis J. and Virginia (nee Blakey) Croak, his brothers, John and Robert and his first wife, Susan (nee Nolte). 

Further survived by his children Carolyn, Marti (Dale) Streitenberger, Dan (Kathy), his stepsons, David (Cindy) and Joseph (Michele) Brown. Loved by his grandchildren, Steven and John Streitenberger, Michelle Croak, Jenna, Sarah and Olivia Brown, and Samuel, Alexander and Simon Brown.

Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1953, he entered the Army and served as a Legal Officer in various posts including one year in Korea. Upon completion of military service, he spent five years as an Assistant District Attorney in Milwaukee followed by over 50 years in private practice. He was a member of the Wisconsin Judicial Counsel, a life member of The American Law Institute, and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. In addition to his private practice, Fran served on numerous boards including 20 years as President of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. 

An avid sports fan, Fran enjoyed his time as President of the Milwaukee Admirals Hockey Team, President of the Greater Milwaukee Open Golf Tournament, and as a board member of the Milwaukee Brewers. Fran was a lifelong University of Wisconsin Badger fan and for over 60 years had season football tickets. 

Fran was a giant in the Milwaukee legal community, valued for his intelligence, integrity, and decency as well as his willingness to mentor young lawyers. Always self-effacing and kind, Fran’s counsel was eagerly sought by others who recognized how very gifted he was. A prince of a man. Goodbye dear Fran. You will be sorely missed by all who knew you.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 3:00 PM until the Time of Remembrance at 5:00 PM, at the Funeral Home.
