While John had a very successful career in optical sales, his passion in life was Scouting, starting as a young boy, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, and then introducing his son Luke to Scouting. John had many accomplishments that he was proud of in Scouting, including raising over 1.5 million dollars in donations, presiding on over 500+ Eagle Scout Boards of Review, mentoring many volunteers and scouts in all areas, and planting over 10,000 trees at the Southern Trails Camporee at Ottawa Lake State Forest.

John had many hobbies and interests including flying, traveling, gardening, photography, camping, trains, history, geography, model trains, Sinatra, and astronomy.  Some travel destinations involved these other activities, including Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, Horseshoe Curve, Durango-Silverton Railway, North Platte (nation’s largest train yard), Orlando Disney World, Pensacola, Canadian camping vacations, Sinatra concerts, and the Solar Eclipse of 1979 for starters.  He travelled to 49 out of the 50 United States.

John was very proud of his many years of sobriety and volunteer work with AA.
