Mark Joseph Ciccantelli, MD

Mark J. Ciccantelli, MD died Jan 1, 2019, in Wauwatosa. Born in Philadelphia Nov 30, 1920, son of Italian Immigrants, Marino and Anna Ciccantelli. A 1945 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Mark served the Milwaukee area as a physician for over 4 decades.

Mark served in the US Army Medical Corps and was discharged as a Captain in 1948.  He met his first wife, Sheila Fay, while stationed in El Paso, TX. They married in 1947, and had 6 children before her death in 1982. Mark started his medical career as a general practitioner in East Troy, WI. He did a residency in internal medicine at Milwaukee VA Medical Center, and in 1957, joined the Clinic of Internal Medicine in Wauwatosa. He had a special interest in rheumatic diseases. He was affiliated during his career with a number of area hospitals, including St. Luke’s, West Allis Memorial and St. Mary’s, where he was Director of Medical Education from 1959-1972 and spent 1 year as Chief of Medicine at the VA Butler (PA) Healthcare. Upon his return to Milwaukee in 1976, became Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Deaconess & Good Samaritan Hospitals. Mark returned to private practice in the 1980’s and finished his career with the Clinic of Internal Medicine. He was widely respected by colleagues, students and patients for his skill and humanity.

Mark married Susan Foley in 1992 and they lived in Wauwatosa and Brookfield.  Mark is survived by his wife, Susan Foley; children Kathleen (Frank) Surico, Patricia (David Popalisky) Ciccantelli; Stephen (Angie) Ciccantelli; David Ciccantelli; Meg Ciccantelli; and Anne Christenson; stepchildren Henry McElvery, Paul (Tracy) McElvery, and Alison McElvery. Further survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews.

Mark enjoyed golf, handball, sailing and travel. He especially loved spending time with his family.  He was dearly loved by family and friends, and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the care and kindness Mark received from the staff at The Lutheran Home and VITAS Health Care.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 from 9:00 am until the 10:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish, 7474 Harwood Ave., Wauwatosa, WI 53213. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee.
