Fr. Burns was a member of the St. Camillus Jesuit Community and was called to eternal life on August 2, 2018. He was 81 years old and a member of the Society of Jesus for almost 54 years. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1959. From 1972 to 1991 he taught theology at Marquette High and was Director of the Counseling Center. He spent the rest of his priestly ministry in pastoral work. He was pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in St. Paul, MN from 1991-2004 and in 2002 also became pastor of St. Luke’s Church. For four years he did pastoral ministry in San Diego, CA. Because of declining health, he was missioned to the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in 2014.
Fr. Burns was born in South St. Paul, MN on October 10, 1936. He entered the Society of Jesus at Jesuit College in St. Bonifacius MN on September 1, 1964. He was ordained at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD on June 3, 1972.
Fr. Burn’s brother, Robert, predeceased him. He is survived by two sisters, Rosemarie Burns and Margaret Burns both from California and a nephew, Ron Burns of St. Paul, MN.
There will be a wake at Madonna della Strada Chapel in the Jesuit Community at St. Camillus, 10201 W. Wisconsin Ave. from 6:00-7:30 on Monday, August 13. The funeral Mass will follow at 7:30. The inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery at 9:00am on Tuesday, August 14.
