Rev. Eugene J. Nevins, S.J.

Fr. Nevins was a member of the St. Camillus Jesuit Community and was called to eternal life on February 2, 2018. He was 85 years old and a member of the Society of Jesus for 66 years. He received an MA degree from the School of Applied Theology in Berkeley, CA and an M.Div. from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. The majority of Fr. Nevins’ ministry as a priest was in pastoral work as an associate pastor in parish and several chaplaincies in hospitals. He was Director of Catholic Chaplains at Cook County Hospital and at John H. Stroger Hospital, both in Chicago, IL. Because of declining health, he was missioned to the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in 2012.
Fr. Nevins was born in Chicago, IL on March 28, 1932. After graduating from Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien in 1950, he attended Marquette University for one year before entering the Society of Jesus as a Jesuit brother. He requested priestly ordination and after theology studies, he was ordained in Chicago, IL on June 14, 1980.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary Therese Twohig and Patricia Mulvihill. He was predeceased by his sister, Alice.
There will be a wake on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 5:30pm in the Court East Chapel at St. Camillus, 10100 W. Bluemound Road. The funeral Mass will follow at 7:00pm. His burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 9:00am on Wednesday, February 7. Memorials may be sent to the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus, 1010 N. Hooker St., Chicago, IL 60642 with a note “in memory of Fr. Eugene Nevins, S.J.”
