Rev. Patrick J. Boyle, S.J.

March 13, 1932 ~ October 25, 2022 (age 90)


Rev. Patrick J. Boyle, S.J., priest, professor, chaplain in Vietnam, and retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, was called to eternal life on October 25, 2022, at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, WI. He was 90 years old, a Jesuit for 72 years and a priest for 59 years. Born in Chicago, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1950 after graduating from Campion High School and studying for a year at Loyola University Chicago. He was ordained a priest in 1963. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Latin and a master’s degree in sociology at LUC and a doctorate in theology at Marquette University. He taught at Loyola Academy in Wilmette (1957-1960) and was assistant principal for discipline at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati (1965-1968).  He completed parachutist training and served his beloved troops in Vietnam as their chaplain. He was awarded two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star for his bravery in battle. He later was director of Bellarmine Retreat House in Barrington (1971-1983) before teaching moral theology for 37 years at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Catherine (Bruen) Boyle, his sister Ellen Wilmouth, and his brothers James, Jude, and Leo. He is survived by his brother Gerald (Marna) of Burlington, WI and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary on Thursday, November 10 at 10:30 a.m., with Most Rev. Jerome Listecki, Archbishop of Milwaukee, presiding. Family will welcome guests at a viewing starting at 9:00 a.m. After Mass, burial with military honors will take place at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Camillus Jesuit Community, 10201 W. Wisconsin Ave., Wauwatosa, WI 53226.
