Bro. William J. Foster, S.J.

Bro. Foster was member of the St. Camillus Jesuit Community and was called to eternal life on Sept 2. He was 88 years old, a Jesuit for 61 years. He spent the early years of his Jesuit ministry as a gardener, engineer, carpenter, electrician, and plumber at Jesuit communities in Milwaukee, St. Bonifacius, MN, and Oshkosh, WI. In 1966, he was missioned to Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, S.D. He remained there until 2013 when he came to St. Camillus because of declining health. During his 47 years of hardworking, cheerful, and dedicated ministry at Holy Rosary, he worked in maintenance and served Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds from 1980-1995. The staff at the mission as well as the Lakota people loved “Brother Bill.”

Bro. Foster was born July 2, 1929 in Omaha, NE. He received his early education at St. John’s School in Omaha, NE. He entered the Society of Jesus on March 4, 1956 and he took his final vows on August 15, 1967.

He is survived by a brother Dr. Donald Foster, Charleston, WV and a sister, Elizabeth O’Melia, of Palm Desert, CA. His sister, Patricia Currier, predeceased him.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at St. Camillus in the Court East Chapel, 2nd floor (10100 W. Bluemound Rd., Wauwatosa, WI.) from 6pm until the Mass of Christian Burial at 7pm. Committal prayers will be held on Thursday, September 7 at 9:30am in the West Chapel at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to USA Midwest Province, 1010 N. Hooker Street, Chicago, IL 60642 with a note “In memory of Bro. William Foster, S.J.”
